RHEL 6 : wpa_supplicant (Unpatched Vulnerability)

critical Nessus Plugin ID 196855

Synopsis

The remote Red Hat 6 host is affected by multiple vulnerabilities that will not be patched.

Description

The remote Redhat Enterprise Linux 6 host has one or more packages installed that are affected by multiple vulnerabilities that have been acknowledged by the vendor but will not be patched.

- wpa_supplicant: P2P group information processing vulnerability (CVE-2021-0326)

- wpa_supplicant: EAP-pwd side-channel attacks as a result of cache access patterns (CVE-2022-23304)

- wpa_supplicant 0.4.0 through 2.5 does not reject \n and \r characters in passphrase parameters, which allows local users to trigger arbitrary library loading and consequently gain privileges, or cause a denial of service (daemon outage), via a crafted (1) SET, (2) SET_CRED, or (3) SET_NETWORK command.
(CVE-2016-4477)

- An issue was discovered in rsn_supp/wpa.c in wpa_supplicant 2.0 through 2.6. Under certain conditions, the integrity of EAPOL-Key messages is not checked, leading to a decryption oracle. An attacker within range of the Access Point and client can abuse the vulnerability to recover sensitive information.
(CVE-2018-14526)

- The implementations of SAE in hostapd before 2.10 and wpa_supplicant before 2.10 are vulnerable to side channel attacks as a result of cache access patterns. NOTE: this issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2019-9494. (CVE-2022-23303)

- The implementation of PEAP in wpa_supplicant through 2.10 allows authentication bypass. For a successful attack, wpa_supplicant must be configured to not verify the network's TLS certificate during Phase 1 authentication, and an eap_peap_decrypt vulnerability can then be abused to skip Phase 2 authentication.
The attack vector is sending an EAP-TLV Success packet instead of starting Phase 2. This allows an adversary to impersonate Enterprise Wi-Fi networks. (CVE-2023-52160)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied on the package manager's report that the package is installed.

Solution

The vendor has acknowledged the vulnerabilities but no solution has been provided. Refer to the vendor for remediation guidance.
